2014

The following is a comprehensive list of every film I’ve seen that debuted in the year 2014 in a U.S. theater, or if not released in the U.S., then released in 2014 in its home country. My favorite 20 films are ranked, while the remaining are in approximate order according to overall feelings and lasting impressions. Films near the top are worth watching, while films near the bottom are not worth your time. Those movies seen in the middle portion are worth filtering through and watching, depending if it peaks your specific interest in the film, whether because it has a favorite director, actor, or interesting plot. A good rule of thumb: if it’s below the middle of the unranked section, then it probably isn’t worth watching.

1. Boyhood

IMDb
an incredible achievement in film. Linklater shows dedication to the craft and comes through with everything you would expect from a film project that spans 12 years over the course of a boy’s life. i enjoyed every minute, and look forward to the rewatch. go see this asap

2. Birdman

IMDb
unbelievably unique and well thought out dramatic comedy from Inarittu. Mexican directors Cuaron and Inarittu are absolutely revolutionizing the film industry right now with not only the way films are shot, but also the way they are realized, written and directed. such an incredibly philosophical film with near perfect execution. there is at least one scene that throws me a little off guard, which may or may not be a good thing, but overall i loved the idea and the concept, and the production value was damn near perfect. definitely blown away by multiple aspects of this, as i was left speechless walking out of the theater. i think in terms of which is a more perfect film, it’s hard to knock down Linklater’s “Boyhood”, but this comes very close, largely due to the wonderful execution of the unique style Inarittu attempts here.

3. Whiplash

IMDb
so amazing. perfect combination of believable writing, exciting plot twists, tremendous acting, good directing and great music that didn’t necessarily steal the show. wonderful on so many levels, i think it suffices to say, “just watch it”. you will enjoy it, regardless of what type of movie you like. its a little indie, a little drama, a few laughs and a good amount of thrill. fun stuff but probably not as extraordinary as “Birdman” or “Boyhood” for me.

4. Leviathan

IMDb
dark and beautiful drama, such intense realism that it makes you angry with the world. just a real well told and well produced story that isn’t especially unique or extravagant, but still maintains quality in all aspects of film making. must watch, and definitely recommended for all, but this isn’t for those who hate sad/depressing films.

5. Foxcatcher

IMDb
wow great film. haunting and creepy drama with incredible acting. the story is beautifully constructed and the plot is well maintained. Carell probably deserves an award from this, although there are some other great leads from this year. just overall a really good film that probably isn’t going to outshine some of the more progressive films from this year, but definitely deserves as much of the hype. well done and an absolute must watch.

6. Interstellar

IMDb
Nolan adds to his excellent filmography with yet another beautifully constructed science fiction drama thrillers. many tearjerker moments, and definitely a nicely put together plot. there are some moments of overdone Hollywood-ness, but overall this is a pure delight and one of the best of the year.

7. Gone Girl

IMDb
you really can’t go wrong with David Fincher as a director. he has such a great, distinctive style that adds some other element to it. i think the story is wonderful and not overly complex, with just the right amount of mystery, suspense and intelligence. good writing, good acting, and just wonderful overall. although i do think it relies on the style too much at times.

8. The Grand Budapest Hotel

IMDb
another enjoyable film from Wes Anderson. thoroughly entertaining, great style as always, and def worth the watch if you enjoy any other Anderson film.

9. Starred Up

IMDb
one of the better films i’ve seen lately. great acting by the lead, and great writing. incredible opening and wonderful throughout. i can’t remember a film that flew by so quickly and kept me engaged so continuously. at times, it may have felt ridiculous in the writing, but overall a great film and a must watch.

10. Omar

IMDb
very good film about life on the border between Israel and Palestine. very emotional at times, and constantly thrilling to watch. check out the rest of this director’s filmography.

11. Like Father, Like Son

IMDb
simple yet stunning and packed with emotion. very smooth and minimalistic style, similar to many other famous Japanese drama directors. has a very good story and develops it beautifully. isnt overly predictable, which is a good thing and showcases the actors talents, which surprisingly includes some very gifted young child actors. great direction, great writing, great score, great everything. a must watch film, and definitely sure to be one of the better Japanese films from this year.

12. Two Days, One Night

IMDb
this is the definition of an amazingly well made film about a really simple, borderline boring, story. you know the directing and writing is good when a story this bland can make you feel so many emotions. must watch, especially if you like foreign made arthouse realism. wonderful performance by Cotillard and supporting cast also.

13. Blue Ruin

IMDb
one of the best films of this year. definitely has everything that a great film needs: great idea, great writing for that idea, great cinematography and visuals, great acting and great directing. absolutely a must watch, especially if you love indie drama thrillers. i will be sure to follow up on this director in the future.

14. Force Majeure

IMDb
intensely dramatic moments synthesized out of a very simple, common event that happens to all of us in our lives. this is the type of realism that pulls you into the story whether you can relate to it or not. similar movie to “Two Days, One Night”, in terms of its production, but the acting isn’t as strong.

15. The Raid 2

IMDb
wow i didn’t think they could top the previous film in this series, but it sure seems like they did. absolutely some of the best fight scenes, action scenes, and violence you will ever see in a movie. good story with good acting too. the overall plot and script accompanying it seems a bit unoriginal, as well as hard to follow at times, but have no fear, all you need to do is just sit back and enjoy the thrill ride that is this movie.

16. Snowpiercer

IMDb
such a great film with such important messages. i think the underlying thematic elements of the movie are what really sets this film apart from other movies. great acting, writing and action added in make this a fun watch as well. Korean director Bong Joon-Ho has a proven track record of awesome films, and i encourage you to watch them all.

17. Ilo Ilo

IMDb
great Asian drama about the relationship between a mischievous boy and his maid/nanny. good strong family issues addressed as well as cultural and idealistic values touched on. feels lacking a bit and bit boring or slow but overall a well done arthouse drama; typical film you would see nominated for Best Foreign Picture at the Oscars.

18. Nightcrawler

IMDb
Gylenhaal does an amazing job in this role, maybe one of his best acting jobs ever. a ton of fun to watch, and a unique view into the world of amateur journalism. wonderfully produced, but has some moments that show how overly “Hollywood” the production is, whatever that means. great watch though.

19. Winter Sleep

IMDb
yet another arthouse drama from Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. very long and slow but can be very rewarding and enriching if you invest yourself into the world Ceylan creates. some solid dialogue that is very philosophical and representative of the characters. you will learn something about yourself from these long conversations, but you only if you can adapt yourself to the movie.

20. Ida

IMDb
good artsy film. a little dry for my liking, but definitely a well done piece of cinema. not sure there was as much character development or plot movement as i would have liked, but still a good watch.

Locke

IMDb
this is a film about nothing and everything at the same time. Tom Hardy gives an intensely wonderful performance, meanwhile the writing and direction keeps you excited and anxious the entire way through. there is no flash or fluff to this movie; just a good and unique indie film.

Wild

IMDb
was expecting a pretty cliche feminist movie about a woman who finds her inner strength on a life changing journey, and, yes, that’s kind of what it is, but there is definitely more to it than that. great performance by Witherspoon and pretty good direction. writing was a tad generic but still good. has a feel and style perfect for a family but definitely has some scenes inappropriate for those under 18, so i guess this is really just a film for females 18 and over.

Selma

IMDb
very well done historical film with good, powerful scenes. great acting all around and nice direction. not sure if it’s deserving of Best Picture but i can see it winning it.

The Imitation Game

IMDb
very good biographical drama about the life of Alan Turing. hits all the important points and portrays him in the proper light. nothing too extraordinary about this though, especially in terms of what the viewer might expect from this. either way great film for any viewer and any occasion.

American Sniper

IMDb
wonderful production and direction. Cooper gives a great performance, as did several others. the entire movie kept me excited and on the edge of my seat. must watch, but this won’t be the most powerful military film you’ll ever watch.

The Theory of Everything

IMDb
pretty standard biographical drama about a famous historical person, with the properly done love story and all the necessary facts about the person thrown in. this isn’t by any means a bad movie, and it is in fact enjoyable to watch for almost all moviegoers but don’t expect something artsy or unique with this. i will say Redmayne does a wonderful job portraying Hawking though.

Fury

IMDb
awesome action, but had some great acting and writing too. wasn’t as cliche as you’d expect, but still not the most unique war film about world war II. definitely a ton of fun and great watch.

Still Alice

IMDb
deeply sad at moments, but still touches on the realism of living with Alzheimer’s. Julianne Moore definitely puts together an Oscar worthy performance, and i think the support is well casted and well acted. not the most original film, but still well done in its own right.

Only Lovers Left Alive

IMDb
newest film from the darkly beautiful mind of Jim Jarmusch. not sure how to categorize the drama, but if i were to attempt, i would say this is film noir horror arthouse with a dash of drama and realism. very indie and unique, and not for the average film-goer, but definitely a treat for those who can appreciate the occasional unusual movie. fun story and great writing and direction with a really awesome style.

A Most Violent Year

IMDb
director J.C. Chandor has so far put out 3 wonderful films. they aren’t flashy and they aren’t especially exciting, but they hold you in suspense with wonderful acting and writing. definitely think this film is worth watching, most importantly for Oscar Isaac’s stellar performance. surprised this film isn’t talked about more.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

IMDb
easily the best Apes film so far, at least for the modern series. great story, great visuals, great action and not too cheesy or overdone. scifi is not really my genre at all, but this was a great overall film that i have no problem putting near the top of my list.

Mr. Turner

IMDb
Mike Leigh paints a beautiful picture of the famous 19th century painter J.M.W. Turner, but the art isn’t as exciting to watch as you might imagine. film has a great feel to it, with a wonderful performance by Spall, but the writing is a little difficult to understand for the average movie goer and the plot is a little empty as far as exciting things to watch for. good arthouse, bad for group watchings in a movie theater.

Top Five

IMDb
not the most action packed comedy of the year, but probably the most realistic and most genuine. good scenes with good acting and writing. some of the characters are written too strongly, but i think the message is well maintained, as well the amount of humor. Chris Rock is a delight to watch in this one. feels like he’s all grown up.

Big Hero 6

IMDb
combine Kick-Ass, X-Men and any Disney produced animated film from the past 10 years and this is the film you get. total fun and some great characters, but not the most unexpected of plots. must watch for any family viewing though.

Blind

IMDb
creative and ambitious Norwegian film. does not fully achieve what it sets out to do, but very enjoyable watch nonetheless. definitely something unique.

Manuscripts Don’t Burn

IMDb
this is a controversial Iranian film within the country due to the subject matter. tells the story of writers being censored and the aftermath of their actions. great story to tell, but i think it could have been better written and much better acted. very much an arthouse, indie film.

Pride

IMDb
feel like a film like this has been made many times before, but this is definitely still worthy of high praise. good acting, writing, and everything else, but just felt a little cliche and pretty predictable. definitely a feel good type story.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her

IMDb
a great film in some ways, good acting and decent story. writing is a bit amateur at times, but the feel and mood is strongly built. the movie leaves you caring about the story and the characters for some reason. seems worth it to watch both “Her” and “Him” from this series, as opposed to just watching “Them”, which is the combined version.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him

IMDb
same film as above, but told from the male perspective. i think it was definitely worth watching both films, as new things happen and you catch different glimpses of each person’s emotional ups and downs, as well as their perspective on the opposite person. i think this series is way more interesting viewed in this manner, as opposed to watching the “Them” version.

Calvary

IMDb
great followup to the funny and enjoyable “The Guard” from John McDonagh. this isn’t as funny but still features the occasional laugh. has a good strong story with nice writing and camera shots. was hoping for a little more but overall a good film and worth the watch. potentially in the top 20 for this year, so definitely check it out, especially if you like Irish films.

Guardians of the Galaxy

IMDb
definitely one of the better comic book movies in that it promotes a sort of comic book attitude and persona. the characters are more humorous than they are scary and the egos are left for the villains only. this reminds me of the more recent Amazing Spiderman series, which has more child-like humor, the basis for comic books. compared to films of other genres though, Guardians is lacking in a few departments.

Chef

IMDb
written and directed by Jon Favreau; i actually really enjoyed this film. definitely has a fun and humorous feel with a lot of guilty pleasure scenes. some funny one liners and a nice overall message. definitely not an artsy film with a strong message, but i think a still well produced story about a chef dealing with all the aspects of his life. a lot of fun and to some a favorite type of film, but hard to imagine this winning any type of awards or being compared to the real unique films from this year. still better than most mainstream films out of Hollywood.

St. Vincent

IMDb
enjoyable as hell to watch and pretty funny. a couple really powerful scenes of drama and a happy ending makes this the epitome of a feel good, fun for the whole family film. don’t expect something too unique but expect to enjoy it. Murray is great in this role.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

IMDb
probably the best of the 7 x-men films so far. this had a ton of good action that seemed genuine, realistic and not cliche. the writing was good and not overdone, the production value was good, but not too “Hollywood”. and most importantly the plot was exciting but didn’t exploit any of the obvious cheesy powers of the characters. a couple powerful messages and metaphors too. fun for the whole family and for the typical comic book movie fan.

John Wick

IMDb
awesome fun, great fight scenes and action, reasonably decent story and writing, average acting. basically the same as Taken, but still a ton of fun.

Frank

IMDb
unique and daring film about an indie punk band which doesn’t quite understand itself and what it wants. very adventurous and creative and definitely opens your eyes to the various ideas indie films take on these days. has some very happy moments and some odd ones, but overall this is an indie comedy with a touch of real life drama. good acting that is definitely beyond the norm and an interesting script with a very tidy ending.

Coherence

IMDb
very unique scifi drama thriller inspired by the theoretical foundation of quantum physics and the idea of alternate realities. this was very interesting and the story is as intellectually successful as Nolan’s Inception. as someone who has taken many courses in physics, i have a special appreciation for what the film sets out to do. i’ll be the first to admit that the attempt at alternate realities isn’t perfectly executed, but is a valiant effort nonetheless. the overall message i gathered from the film was a good one and the tension built throughout the middle portion of the film definitely reinforced the story’s lesson for me. would recommend to almost anyone, especially anyone already familiar with Schrodinger’s Cat or quantum mechanics concepts.

Love Is Strange

IMDb
somewhat touching story about an older gay couple and their struggle to maintain their relationship, not because of their sexuality, but rather due to their inevitable aging. a good film on the difficulties of living apart from your loved one, but other than that this movie feels empty and without substance. good acting by the leads.

The Fault In Our Stars

IMDb
movie version of the recently popular book about dying teenagers who find love, and life within it. script was a seemingly good adaptation; i haven’t read the book, so i can only assume the movie does it justice. the acting was nice and good and everything felt genuine. definitely overly cliche at times, but still a perfect film for a date or for the family. one of the script writers is a good well known writer for indie romantic dramas, so check him out if you like this style.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

IMDb
pretty cool modern Persian vampire indie flick by up and coming Iranian writer/director Amirpour. very nice visuals and well shot, decent story that is well written, and overall a movie that keeps your attention. look forward to more from these actors and this director.

Veronica Mars

IMDb
as a continuation of the cult classic TV series, this movie is an awesome watch and a perfect reunion of characters. although a bit cliche and forced as a story, its no different than the very sensationalized television seasons. the characters stay true to their initial development and their backstories over these past 7 years are what you would want and expect. this has been and will definitely continue to be a guilty pleasure series of mine, and i hope to see a sequel.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

IMDb
animated Japanese family drama about a princess. mostly cliche and predictable. this did nothing for me, but definitely a great film to watch if you like family films or have kids that can watch subtitled films. the story wasn’t as mature as a Miyazaki film.

Begin Again

IMDb
if you’ve seen the film Once and liked it, then you will love this movie. great date movie and lots of feel good moments with bits of drama. great music being made in this movie and even though it was a bit cliche and predictable, i thought the production of the music to go along with the story and feel really made up for it. succeeds at what it attempts to do.

Hellion

IMDb
great indie drama about a troublemaking kid and how it affects those around him. some deeply touching moments and good acting overall. Aaron Paul does a decent job; child actors do a great job. writing is decent.

The Equalizer

IMDb
very fun action packed action thriller with some nice dramatic moments. pretty typical Hollywood style and Denzel is obviously in typical form here. very similar story to “John Wick”, which came out this year also. i think its worth the watch, but don’t expect anything artsy or metaphorical in content.

Lucy

IMDb
loved this. liked the idea and liked the execution and i think it conveys an important message. but as a film it was just decent, slightly above average. definitely a must watch.

The Trip to Italy

IMDb
a great sequel to the unique original film about Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon who go on a vacation tasting wine and food and enjoying each other’s company. this time it’s in Italy and it showcases all the beautiful visuals and cuisine of Italy. hilarious impressions from both actors, but also a very good story and script. wonderfully directed with really no flaws. love this series.

Stray Dogs

IMDb
pretty boring and slow paced Taiwanese family drama. i think the message is good and i think this could have had more widespread appeal, but its just not for everyone. need to have patience to watch this director’s movies.

The Skeleton Twins

IMDb
wasn’t as funny as i had hoped it would be but pretty emotional and serious at times. addresses some typical problems for middle aged white people from dysfunctional families who have a history of depression. surprisingly not cliche, and pretty well produced, acted and written. really no complaints here, other than it was a somewhat generic story but overall i enjoyed it.

Under the Skin

IMDb
found this to be incoherent and pretentious. a decent message but a failed attempt at delivering it. i want to say that Johannson was good in it, but i don’t even really know if that is true because the script and direction are just so bad, in my opinion. had some decent parts and i like most of the early/middle portion of the film but i just found it to be lacking in many things, especially substance.

Before I Disappear

IMDb
solid indie flick about a man and his personal problems and the family he has that saves him. there is much humor and can be funny at times, but this is a drama at heart, with melodramatic elements. worth the watch.

22 Jump Street

IMDb
very funny and enjoyable. as good of a comedy as you will find these days. had a plot that wasn’t predictable or cliche also. surprisingly it wasn’t too vulgar also.

Cheap Thrills

IMDb
was a ton of fun to watch and follow along with. feels a little overdone, but some real good acting with decent writing and direction. fun flick for a saturday night.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

IMDb
pretty good sequel, especially for a superhero flick. all the action and CGI was good and on point. the writing and story was decent, although none of it really blew me away. above average comic book film.

The Double

IMDb
comedy surrealism meets drama thriller noir style with a Kafka-esque story. a very interesting take on an old tale with some real good acting. i’m not sure that this met it’s original goal, and i don’t think this will be enjoyed by many, but i think there is definitely something cool about what the director tries to do. worth checking out his other films though.

Closed Curtain

IMDb
as experimental and progressive as his previous film. surprisingly easy to watch even considering the extremely long and sometimes boring shots. the story and writing kind of lacks but the mood and feeling set from the start of the film is sufficient to see you through until the end. Panahi is a good Persian director worth checking out.

Enemy

IMDb
essentially the same exact story and idea behind the movie “The Double” (see above) which also came out this year by a different director. technically, they are based on different stories, but both are almost the same story. funny how they claim to be different, but i guess no art is original, just remakes of other artist’s work. this version has a similar vibe and mood. decent acting, kind of too artsy at times, but some good scenes.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

IMDb
just as good as the first one. if you liked that one, then you will like this one. has the same amount of funny moments, sad moments, and action packed moments. great for the family, good for most adults, and just a nice and wholesome story. nothing about this really seemed amazing though.

Inherent Vice

IMDb
extremely dense and difficult to follow if you aren’t paying 110% attention to the dialogue. has a unique style and some beautiful visuals and shots, but for the most part is just lacking in how its written. the plot is confusing at times and the characters aren’t worth caring about. i think this might be Paul Thomas Anderson’s worst film. has some good acting though.

Camp X-Ray

IMDb
good indie drama about a guard and prisoner who become friends in a Guantanamo Bay prison. well shot and directed, but the story is not too entertaining. you will enjoy this if you like touching stories. the acting is good, and the writing is as it should be, but the movie is not exactly exciting to watch. Kristen Stewart does a good job though, as well as her counterpart does.

Cake

IMDb
good serious performance by Aniston and definitely worthy of the Oscar nod, but the film itself is a little cliche and has been done before. there is a good deal worth appreciating about this film, but for the most part there isn’t too much unique or groundbreaking about it.

Laggies

IMDb
decent movie about a woman in her late 20’s “finding herself”, or whatever that means. not bad, and kind of enjoyable at times. pretty indie feel to it, and a well shot film. i do think this is better than a lot of Hollywood garbage you might see these days.

Palo Alto

IMDb
based on short stories by James Franco, this written and directed by Gia Coppola film is lacking in many ways. i like the style and attempt, as well as the issues the film tries to address, but the substance is lacking as well as other features. the music was a little too heavy and overly dramatic which sets an almost satirical tone, which the writing clearly does not match with. i like the acting and some scenes were really great, but overall this is just a decent watch with a decent story.

Night Moves

IMDb
the incredible first half of this movie is not met with a comparable second half and conclusion. the build up of tension in the plot is very well produced and the acting seems to be above average. but the final result and payoff of all the tension is not well achieved. the message is not conveyed as powerfully as it could have been, but the attempt is still understandably respectable. the production value was good as well as most of the writing, but it really is the second half of the film that changes the pace of the film for the worst. definitely a different role for Jesse Eisenberg and a much older Dakota Fanning. would recommend to indie film lovers.

The One I Love

IMDb
very interesting idea that really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but is still entirely watchable and even enjoyable at times. definitely has the potential to cover some topics and themes related to relationships and romance, but i think the script doesn’t achieve this very well. the acting is pretty good, but overall i don’t think the script is as good as it could be, nor the story a very articulate one.

The Normal Heart

IMDb
good HBO film on the topic of the discovery and awareness spreading of AIDS in the early 80’s. good acting and overall pretty good, but something feels very generic about it. kind of irritating to watch at times, but still better than most of the crap that comes out of Hollywood these days.

Into The Woods

IMDb
this is a meshing of several different popular children fairy tales. its well done and in musical format, so if you like musicals or children’s stories, then you will love it.

Dear White People

IMDb
i can’t tell if this is very smart or very pretentious, but expect a good dose of both. very unique and independent satire dramedy. good flow and direction but i think the overall story itself is too much for the average viewer to take. bonus points for style though.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

IMDb
a ton of entertaining action, but honestly such slow moving film with no real substance. not even close to as good as Lord of the Rings, but still a necessary watch if you are a fan of these classic characters.

Neighbors

IMDb
decently funny Seth Rogen comedy that relies on the same type of humor in all his films. the story isn’t that bad, and if you like frat comedies like Animal House or Old School, then you might enjoy this one.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

IMDb
i really like this reboot of Spider-Man. i agree its too soon for a reboot but i think this has a much better cast and vibe for the series and accomplishes the task more so than the previous series. i thought the writing and direction were stellar, and to be quite honest i’m not sure why this one got such average reviews and ratings, as i thought it was much better than what some people might say about it. either way this is a well done superhero film, and i think the series overall should go down as one of the better superhero series.

Cold in July

IMDb
decent thriller drama mystery movie. more of a nail biter than a popcorn flick, but has some cheesy production aspects. considering the big names in the cast, i thought the acting could have been better. interesting story that keeps you involved, and there are some plot twists, but is predictable towards the end.

The Drop

IMDb
pretty cliche and typical New York crime thriller, with more buildup and hype than actual thrill. only bright spot is the character Hardy creates, but overall a pretty bland and semi-enjoyable crime drama thriller. Roskam’s previous film is definitely worth watching though.

Magic in the Moonlight

IMDb
Woody Allen at his worst is still miles better than most directors at their best. worth the watch if you like Firth or Stone as actors, as they are a delight together. pretty basic story and plot. nothing too special here but a nice little flick for couples.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

IMDb
pretty standard Hollywood retelling of a biblical story. definitely a Ridley Scott movie, as this was action packed with a standard love story. they say the bible was the greatest story ever told, but this definitely ain’t the best movie ever made. Bale is fun to watch, as always.

A Most Wanted Man

IMDb
crime thriller with a slightly more artistic style, but still feels like a Hollywood thriller. has some great moments and one really good line near the end, but mostly a generic overly complicated plot and story, with difficult to follow writing at times. the direction is shaky and scattered and i found it boring at times, although i think it was still much better than most thrillers of this type. once again, not the most original idea, but decent execution and great style; just subpar direction and writing in terms of story.

Edge of Tomorrow

IMDb
the idea is a good one, but the execution is kind of poor. annoying to watch at times, even for a mystery scifi thriller. some very good parts, but overall i was unimpressed.

Million Dollar Arm

IMDb
typical Disney cheese. Disney is good at making family films with the perfect amount of laughing, crying and cheering, so its not a bad film, but its formulaic and has been done before. nothing original here, but still an enjoyable film. a bit too long though, at just over 2 hours. Jon Hamm is average at best, but the supporting cast makes up for it.

Godzilla

IMDb
i was definitely overhyped going into this, so i fear i may have too many negative things to say about it. cliche monster movie at times, average in most regards, and too many shortcuts taken in the technicalities of the story. fun to watch, but def lacking in story.

The Judge

IMDb
pretty typical courtroom drama tied in with family issues. nothing unique about this at all, just a Hollywood moneymaker movie aimed at families and the older crowd.

Ride Along

IMDb
decently funny cop comedy; the interaction between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart works for me, but may not work for others. good production value and good writing for a comedy.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

IMDb
the penultimate film of the Hunger Games series. good enough to keep watching the series, but really just more of the same story. nothing to be blown away by, but decent nonetheless.

Horrible Bosses 2

IMDb
so hilarious. these three make such a great comedy team, and i think this written as a perfect modern comedy. it’s not believable, nor is it exceptional acting, but its a funny popcorn flick to watch with friends.

Tusk

IMDb
i think this movie is much better than the reviews lead it on to be, but it’s definitely not something for everyone. a little creepy, a little funny and definitely very weird. the story is unique and the way its told is typical Kevin Smith.

Rosewater

IMDb
probably would have been better if Jon Stewart didn’t make this, and if they used actual Iranians as actors who played Iranians living in Iran. other than that, the subject matter is an important one and the message is not all that bad. could have been much more powerful though.

The Boxtrolls

IMDb
average animated film, good for kids, kind of too simple and cliche for adults. not as good as a Pixar or Disney film but still interesting enough.

The Lego Movie

IMDb
pretty good kids film, but was kind of annoying at times for an adult. watch if you have a family.

Noah

IMDb
pretty whatever movie. started out bad, ended alright. potentially Aronofsky’s worst film ever.

Listen Up Philip

IMDb
i found this to be boring. i rarely cared about any of the characters and the script was very pretentious. you will like it if you enjoy modern indie comedy arthouse that tries to be meta.

God’s Pocket

IMDb
feels a bit scattered and not well organized. the scenes are well written and well acted but the overall vision for the film is lacking in clarity and the climactic points of the film aren’t well thought out. this is a perfect example of a first time filmmaker’s attempt, and although i really like the subject matter and the idea behind it, i still don’t think this was that great. good watch if you’re bored, but there are plenty of better films from this year.

The Rover

IMDb
a film that looks and feels like a really good piece of cinema but actually has no real story or plot. too many times i was watching this and felt like the production, acting, music and writing were so on point, but then i remembered that this story really makes no sense and has no value to it. i dont know why i’m watching it, and to be quite honest i don’t really care about the characters, but it sure is pretty to look at. the director is known for some better films though, so definitely check out “Animal Kingdom”.

Need for Speed

IMDb
probably one of my favorite cheesy action films that will come out this year. definitely a lot of fun and a great beer and popcorn film. not good acting, which actually surprised me because i’ve seen some really great performances by members of this cast in other films, but i guess this is not the type of film that expects very much out of its cast. great action and production, good payoff, but everything was obviously so predictable.

Draft Day

IMDb
the turning points in the plot were not as predictable as i imagined, but it was still a cheesy script with cheesy acting for a pretty simple subject. i love football, but even i don’t really wanna watch a 2 hour movie about an NFL draft. was entertaining at times though.

Black or White

IMDb
pretty bad movie. just so poorly written with filler cliches, while playing on stereotypes. i think it actually tries to address stereotypes, but it does a bad job of it. could have been better, but the script was just so wrong. acting was decent at times, bad at other times. pretty similarly shot to Draft Day, which is also a bad Kevin Costner movie from this year.

A Field in England

IMDb
yea, i really don’t understand this film. boring and seems to be attempting something most will not understand or enjoy. only watch if you like arthouse; this is a modern British progressive horror drama comedy.

The Interview

IMDb
not as funny as Pineapple Express and not as good of a story as This Is The End. definitely worth the watch based on the controversy surrounding it, but don’t expect a real film. but honestly you should know not to expect a real film, its a film by the comedy team of Rogen-Franco.

Wish I Was Here

IMDb
bland and somewhat cliche script. pretty empty as far as plot worth caring about, but a few good scenes of genuine emotion. acting was alright. writing was bad.

The Longest Week

IMDb
steaming pile of shit. possibly the worst film i’ve ever seen. unnecessarily pretentious for a romantic comedy with terrible acting and even worse writing for an unoriginal concept.
